No one blames you for wanting to stay in South Beach. There’s the sand and sun, the Art Deco charm, the oceanfront bike path, the monster-sized mojitos by the infinity pool. Downtown Miami, in contrast, is of secondary appeal, at least as far as most travelers are concerned. But the financial district is slowly but surely becoming more of a cultural draw. A new boutique hotel, the Langford, is helping to change the neighborhood’s image, opening its doors to an enclave of historic character.
The Langford Hotel is located inside an architectural landmark that dates back to the city’s Prohibition era, the Miami National Bank, built in 1925. A Beaux Arts-style gem, the building is still grand and stately with high archways, elegant paneled walls, and quaint original details from relief sculptures to antique elevator buttons. Design elements inside the hotel’s 126 guest rooms and suites also evoke glamorous days gone by: think parquet floors made of white oak, custom-made tufted headboards, patterned wallpaper, intricately tiled bathrooms, and old-fashioned rotary telephones on the bedside tables. Thoroughly contemporary, however, are most other in-room amenities, from the glass-encased rainfall shower and 48-inch LED TV to the minibar stocked with American craft spirits.
There’s no question the Langford’s a lovely hotel. But to lure style-conscious travelers on a detour off Miami’s beach circuit, you need a great bar and restaurant, too. The Langford’s got it, and then some. PB Station, inspired by the bustling energy and sophistication of an old-fashioned train station, serves new American cuisine by the Puerto Rican chef José Mendin. On the rooftop, the stylish Pawn Broker lounge does classic cocktails under the stars, a perfect place for a nightcap with glittering views over the city. Miami looks pretty good from up here: with any luck, the elegant Langford is a sign of things to come.
