It’s been called the Gore-Tex Vortex, the People’s Republic of Boulder, and rather aptly, “Twenty-five square miles surrounded by reality.” It’s true that this Colorado town, at the foot of the Rockies, is something of an alternate reality. But it’s one you’ll be glad to inhabit, so long as you have the right outdoor gear, a decent caffeine tolerance, and reservations at a hotel like Basecamp Boulder.
Like a great fair-trade coffee shop — or, come to think of it, a great hiking boot — it’s a hotel that’s aesthetically pleasing and also practical, stylish even as it delivers the goods. And, at least in this case, the goods are pretty straightforward. You want a central location with easy access to the outdoors. Basecamp Boulder has it: the hotel is located downtown, just off Boulder Creek trail, within walking distance of the University of Colorado and Naropa Institute campuses and the popular Pearl Street pedestrian mall. In Boulder, you’ll also want a room that’s spacious and comfortable, a place to rest after all the hiking and biking you're bound to do. Basecamp Boulder has that. And they’re hip, too, done up in a look you might call outdoorsy retro: crisp white and canvas, whimsical hand-drawn maps, vintage clock radios, light fixtures modeled after old-fashioned camping lanterns.
Now that we have the basics covered, let’s go over your wish list. Fancy a rock-climbing adventure at dawn? No problem, you can make your own coffee and breakfast in your in-room kitchenette. Need to get some work done? That 32-inch flat panel LCD TV doubles as a computer monitor. Didn’t want to squeeze your Dahon folding bike into the overhead compartment? The Basecamp Boulder will be happy to lend you a bicycle.
There’s also a fitness center — which may seem like overkill but gets plenty of use in America’s fittest town — as well as a spa and hot tub for unwinding after the day’s adventures, and laundry facilities so you can keep those technical garments fresh. There’s no restaurant, just a coffee bar in the lobby — but with a location like this, you’re likely to be out and about all day anyway, and out again for dinner: just think of the hotel as, well, your base camp.
Please note:
Reception is available from 8am–11pm daily. Please contact Customer Service at least 24 hours in advance of your arrival for personalized check-in instructions.
