Even among the rarefied company of Irish castle hotels, Kilronan Castle stands out. It’s set in County Roscommon, on the banks of Lough Meelagh, an hour’s drive inland from Sligo. Surrounded by parkland and forest, this 18th-century edifice was expanded in the 19th, and lately it’s been restored to its former glory, and turned into a modern luxury hotel in the process.
The restoration was an extremely thorough one, and the present-day interiors are a tribute to the era of the castle’s foundation. The suites in the original house are a touch more atmospheric, perhaps, though those in the newer addition follow along in the same grand style. The spa is a fine one, and it’s complemented by the setting, which lends itself to nature walks, boating, golf, and plenty more; the restaurant, Douglas Hyde, is named for Ireland’s first president.
