Modern Design & Quiet
Though the national borders are of secondary importance when it comes to the Alps — nature doesn’t much care whether it’s in Italy, or Austria, or Switzerland — you know you’re in Italian territory when you encounter a hotel with a name like “SILENA, your soulful hotel.” It’s nothing if not memorable, and in that way it’s entirely fitting for a hotel as unique as this one.
Its form is a thorough refutation of the idea that contemporary architecture is in any way cold or inhuman. The design, by the Bolzano-based architecture firm noa*, combines bold ornaments, like the mashrabiya-style screens that adorn the façade and select interior spaces, with an austere, modernist-inspired minimalism, all rendered in simple materials like concrete and Alpine-appropriate wood.
To this transformative architecture you can add the restorative effects of a Southeast Asian–inspired wellness program, where the spa is properly feng shui’d and the typically Alpine leisure pursuits are joined by yoga, Qi-Gong, and guided meditation, and a Literature Lounge and Tea Library coexist harmoniously with a more traditional restaurant, where painstakingly sourced local ingredients are lovingly prepared in the Slow Food style. The proprietors, Simon and Magdalena — hence the name — are a personal trainer and a literary type, respectively; no surprise, then, that their hotel caters to both body and mind.
