Contemporary Classic & Quiet
Imagine an idyllic Brazilian getaway. Chances are you’re picturing the glamorous nightlife and dramatic landscape of Rio de Janeiro, or the white sandy beaches of the northeast, the resorts of Buzios or Florianópolis — but not São Paulo. Here’s a word to the wise: like New York, São Paulo isn’t only the name of a city, but of an entire state. And it’s a state full of lesser-known vacation havens, particularly along the lush north coastline. It’s here — between the ocean and on the Atlantic rainforest, on the scenic route, one might say, between Brazil’s two largest cities — that hotels like the Nau Royal Hotel Boutique & Spa draw stylish beachgoers looking for a little R&R within easy reach of the continent’s largest metropolis.

With a natural landscape this lovely, the trick is simply to feature it, to enhance it, to make it even more enjoyable — a feat the Nau Royal pulls off with panache. It’s a modern getaway, smartly designed and eco-friendly, which feels particularly appropriate in a tropical climate suited to indoor-outdoor living. Who wants to sit inside an air-conditioned room, after all, when you could be drinking caipirinhas by candlelight on a natural wood deck?

There are only 13 rooms, making the Nau Royal a proper boutique. The Garden room is simple, all white and wood with a hammock swinging on the private balcony facing gardens by landscape designer Marcelo Bellotto — and yes, there’s air conditioning and a flat-screen TV, should you desire it.

Twice its size is the Al Mare suite, with an oceanfront balcony and a separate living room. And twice the size of that is the top-of-the-line Royal Trussardi, the penthouse suite, a breezy all-white retreat with a super king-sized bed and a bathroom with both a Japanese-style bathtub and a pair of showers.

Keep up with the Joneses and pop by the Royal Spa by L’Occitane before dinner, served, of course, in a spectacular oceanfront setting at the hotel’s Azul Marinho restaurant. Chef Marleide Ribeiro excels at preparing the region’s speciality, freshly caught crab, making the restaurant a popular destination for foodies weekending in the area.
