For a cosmopolitan city that sees so many international visitors, Santiago has a surprising shortage of worthwhile boutique hotels. Especially in comparison with — dare we touch on the age-old rivalry? — its sister city on the other side of the Andes, Buenos Aires. Then again, restoring beautiful old townhouses isn’t rocket science. Two can play this game, even if one has been a bit slow out of the blocks.
Casa Bueras Boutique Hotel, located in the bohemian neighborhood of Lastarria — arguably the most desirable place to stay in the city — is located inside a well-preserved antique building that dates from 1927. Some of that old-fashioned charm shows through to the present day: note the chandeliers, high ceilings, tiled flooring, marble fixtures, and a rear stone staircase that tumbles into a verdant courtyard garden with a swimming pool. But they’re not recreating the roaring twenties here, exactly. Modern artworks, sleek modular sofas, and boldly painted walls add a contemporary edge to the house. The same is true in guest rooms and suites, where bathrooms are done up in cool slate gray and amenities include large picture windows, pillow-top mattresses, blackout curtains, and iPod docks. Junior suites, featuring private balconies, are a big step up from standard rooms, which are on the small side.
The rear patio, charmingly candlelit at night and facing the petite swimming pool, is the hands-down loveliest place to be at Casa Bueras Boutique Hotel. Here, the Deli Lounge restaurant serves an international menu. Skip the sandwiches, if you’re feeling adventurous, and go for something authentic to Chile — camarones al pil pil (fresh shrimp sauteed with garlic, white wine, cilantro and chili pepper) with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc made in the nearby wine country. Make it a whole bottle; there’s hardly a sweeter place to enjoy it in Santiago. When you’re finished, venture into the side streets of Lastarria, lined with art galleries, cocktail bars, and boutiques.
