Modern Design & Quiet
Not far from Cortona, the hilltop village immortalized in Under the Tuscan Sun, Borgo 69 is an idyllic escape in the Italian countryside. All the behind-the-scenes work has already been done — in this case, by a former set designer and his Roman-born partner — to achieve the perfect balance of refinement and rusticity. Set amid the estate’s sprawling olive grove, the hotel’s twelve sustainably built villa suites surround an aquamarine infinity pool. Each has one, two, or three bedrooms, a state-of-the-art kitchen, and a private patio overlooking terraced gardens and the rolling green hills beyond.
The villas’ interiors are light-filled and cozy, with open floor plans, wood-beamed ceilings, original artwork hanging on white walls, and fireplaces lined in exposed brick. The décor is thoughtfully chosen yet understated, from linen armchairs and wooden dining tables to raffia rugs and cushioned wicker sofas, and each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom. Borgo 69’s stylish but casual atmosphere continues at the restaurant, Emporio di Ines, named after the co-owner’s mother. Lunch and local wines are served in the leafy courtyard, Venetian-style small plates are crafted using produce from the kitchen garden, and the bar menu sticks to the classics, mixing up traditional aperitivi like negronis and spritzes. The medieval village of Pozzo della Chiana is only a short walk away, and the staff will gladly arrange nearby activities, from winery visits to hot-air balloon rides.
