Casa da Calçada

Largo do Paço, Nº6, Amarante, Portugal
35 Rooms
Contemporary Classic & Quiet
An hour inland from Porto, along the banks of the River Tâmega, is the historic city of Amarante, among whose well-preserved treasures is the 16th-century Baroque palace that’s now the Casa da Calçada. And while the house itself has been lovingly preserved, its 35 rooms and suites feel free to express their 21st-century personalities — the look is crisp, contemporary, a minimalist counterpart to the palace’s maximalist grandeur.

The riverside setting is a large part of the appeal, and there’s much to be said for staying in and contemplating the views of Amarante, the bulk of which lies across the river. On site there’s a modern spa and wellness complex, as well as an outdoor pool in a garden setting. And the hotel’s estate produces its own vinho verde, which naturally makes an appearance at Largo do Paço, the hotel’s fine-dining Mediterranean restaurant.
