Modern Design & Quiet
There’s only one museum in the world dedicated to the work of the American artist Keith Haring; surprisingly, it’s not in New York, but in the foothills of the Yatsugatake Mountains, a two-hour drive from Tokyo. The acclaimed Japanese architect Atsushi Kitagawara designed the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection and the adjacent Hotel Keyforest Hokuto, both part of a larger art-themed resort. The boutique hotel is visually striking, its modernist silhouette and sharp angles standing out in contrast with the surrounding forest. Each of its six rooms is named for a natural element — air, water, sunlight, and so on — and features minimalist décor in refined but down-to-earth materials like native wood and stone. All have private balconies overlooking the woods, the rooftop terrace offers panoramic mountain views, and the resort’s open-air baths, fed by local hot springs, invite soaks under the stars.
