A perfect example of the turn-of-the-20th-century European grand hotel, the Grand Hôtel Thalasso & Spa stands over a beach on a sheltered bay in the Basque country town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. It’s been thoroughly updated, but without altering its essential character — the rooms and suites are blessed with modern bathrooms and electronics, but the atmosphere of elegant leisure is much as it must have been a century ago. Of particular note is the Loreamar Thalasso & Spa, offering everything from a simple massage or a soak in heated seawater to elaborate quasi-medical health and wellness treatments.
