Rome can be a bit overwhelming — surely there are less exciting places in the world to wake up than in Rome’s Hotel Stendhal, just yards from the Trevi fountain, the Spanish Steps, and the high-end shopping district along the Via dei Condotti. This last, for the committed shopper, may just be enough to induce an attack of Stendhal Syndrome, the illness characterized by fainting or dizziness in the presence of overwhelming beauty.

If so, a place like the Stendhal may just be the thing to soothe those overexcited nerves. Where some Roman hotels lay it on thick, with a florid excess of old-world atmosphere, the Stendhal keeps it relatively simple, in a restrained and clean-lined early 20th-century style. Paneled walls and patterned wallpapers feel like something from a country mansion, or the cabin of a transatlantic steamer — albeit one with a city view. Nearby, the new Stendhal Luxury Suites offer accommodations with a touch more contemporary flair, including modern fixtures in the bathrooms and tasteful patterns in the furnishings.

Ultimately, though, the location is the key to the Stendhal’s appeal. The surrounding streets are teeming with restaurants and shops, and there are enough nearby museums and art galleries to induce another attack in the Stendhal-prone — not to mention the Villa Borghese, one of Rome’s largest and most scenic private parks, just 400 meters to the north.

Please note: Annex suites are located in a separate building on Via Sistina 4, just five minutes' walk from the hotel. Guests staying in an annex suite should check in at the hotel, where a porter will meet them and provide an escort to the room.
