Modern Design 和 Lively
Copenhagen, at its best, is both exceedingly picturesque and eminently livable — a description that’s equally well suited to Hotel SP34. It’s set not far off the main axis of central Copenhagen, on a quiet street lined with lovely townhouses, surrounded by cafés, shops, and galleries. And inside it’s a beautiful blend of two of the Danish capital’s most appealing modes: the bohemian warmth supplied by the well-aged building, and the eye-catching modernity of 20th-century interior design.
The public spaces, firstly, partake of lofty ceilings and generous windows to admit floods of natural light, unusually welcome around these parts; combined with a general taste for reclaimed wood, Edison bulbs, and exposed brick, it’s urban chic exemplified, if at times reminiscent of a photography studio. Work in Progress partners with COFOCO (Copenhagen Food Consulting, naturally) to plate Scandinavian bistro hits in a style-forward dining room. Nearby, Cocks & Cows trades in the chic for a down-home, comfort-food ambience, pairing hearty burgers with a respectable menu of signature cocktails. Drinks, including Denmark’s most extensive port selection, may be downed in several locales, all of them easy on the eyes: a rooftop terrace, a cozy lounge, or Din Nye Ven — “your new friend,” if you’re wondering, and a fine spot to make some. We’ll hazard a guess that the daily wine hour should help lubricate your evenings.
Light plays a strong supporting role upstairs, as well, lending character to the 118 rooms to balance out the grayscale treatments. Contemporary comforts — free wi-fi, 40-inch televisions, REN Clean bath amenities — situate you firmly in the now, though an impeccably designed bedside table presents a few volumes on, yes, impeccable design (surprise, you’re in Copenhagen). After fueling up with an organic breakfast spread, be sure to suss out the neighborhood — luckily, you don’t have to trudge far for some premium waterfront views. There’s a killer bike shop very close by, if you need a little help out the door.
