Amsterdam, when it comes to hotels, is so often a tale of two cities; one is the futuristic wonderland of modern Dutch architecture and design, and the other a storybook vision of antique canal-house charm. Hotel JL No. 76 is a little bit of both: comprising a pair of 18th-century townhouses, the 76 is nonetheless decorated in a contemporary style, and while it’s not nearly as whimsical as some of the city’s more overtly design-oriented boutiques, nor is it nearly as staid as some of its more traditional neighbors.
Sometimes splitting the difference leaves you neither here nor there, but in this case the result is a hotel that gets the balance just right. The architecture is more or less intact, lending a bit of individuality to the historical spaces, and the décor is full of contemporary color, from modern furnishings to custom-designed wallpapers by Dutch artist Barbara Broekman. Standard and Executive rooms differ mainly in space — king/twin beds and rain showers are universal — but the Family room adds a pair of bunk beds, an upgrade for kids over the usual cot or sleeper sofa.
A restaurant and honesty bar serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks in a cozy ground-floor environment, and the hotel’s location, just off the Museumplein, means plenty of alternatives are available. Fans of extremes will find hotels in Amsterdam that are perhaps more focused on design, on history, or on white-glove luxury — but when a bit of versatility is called for, the answer just might be JL No. 76.
