Traditional Elegance & Quiet
Even for Asolo, where old stone villas seem to sprout from the hills like weeds, the sixteenth-century villa that houses Albergo Al Sole is an awfully charming one. Located on a steep, narrow street overlooking Asolo Square and the town beyond, with a classic black-and-white frescoed grotto at the entrance, the twenty-three room albergo is like its rural Veneto town in miniature: several centuries of history, views around every other corner, and no shortage of food and wine — starting (but by no means ending) with prosecco from the surrounding hills.
Rich antique wood is everywhere you look in the bedrooms, while traditional patterned tile work and Tuscan ceramics line the bathrooms. The entry-level rooms are small and quite modest, though views of Asolo’s historic homes or the woods adjacent to the property make the standard doubles feel a bit bigger than the others. The scenery continues to improve from there, though the mansard-roofed Attic Suite which sacrifices vistas for the romantic appeal of having the entire top floor to itself.
Outside, you won’t have much trouble getting a postcard-perfect photo or two. Poets have been singing Asolo’s praises for centuries. “Beauty crowds the eye,” as Robert Browning put it, and indeed the jumble of sun-washed buildings scattered about the rolling green hills, the gardens bursting with Mediterranean plants and flowers, and meandering little streets opening up to big views offer plenty to marvel at.
