MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

A world away from the opulence of the Riviera, the town of Saint-Martin sits on the island of Île de Ré, just off the Atlantic coast of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It’s here just on the edge of the compact town center, that you’ll find Villa Clarisse, a perfectly tranquil escape that’s elevated by 18th-century aesthetics, 21st-century comforts, and an approach to service that’s at once highly personalized and impeccably discreet.

The old house is divided into just four rooms and five suites, all of them designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon in a contemporary-classic style that evokes the era of the hotel’s history. The look is bright, near-monochrome, with accents in maritime blue and a simplicity that feels perfectly art-directed; the comforts, though never ostentatious, are substantial.

Surrounded by the gardens is the hotel’s centerpiece, a lovely outdoor swimming pool, and by the poolside is the spa, which is set to open this spring. A lavish breakfast is the primary meal of the day, while picnic lunches are available during the warmer seasons, and the lounge serves light dishes along with wine and cocktails; for a proper dinner you’ll venture out into the streets of Saint-Martin, which are provided with a multitude of venues for sampling the local fare.

Please note that access to Saint-Martin's harbor is restricted during the high season. If you plan to arrive by car, Villa Clarisse will provide you with a property access code.
