There’s a colorful backstory to the Breidenbacher Hof Düsseldorf, perched canalside on the city’s famed Königsallee boulevard. In its 19th-century heyday, this luxury hotel hosted dignitaries and Russian czars; the building was destroyed by bombs in World War II, rebuilt, then demolished again to make way for the glamorous current iteration. The elegant Lobby Lounge, with its coffered ceilings, dark wood paneling, and silk brocade, evokes the past, as do the retro brasserie, The Duchy, and the black marble bar. Rooms and suites are refined yet contemporary, featuring plush lounge space, spacious Italian marble bathrooms with deep soaking tubs, king-sized beds, and tech-forward bedside touch panels to control lighting and temperature. Downstairs, there’s a high-end spa with an indoor pool, two Finnish saunas, and a steam bath. While beneath street level, look for a portion of Düsseldorf’s old city walls on display, uncovered during a recent round of excavations.
