Le Domaine du Gouverneur

Lieu-dit Le Breuil, Monthieux, France
53 Rooms
Contemporary Classic & Quiet
You’d expect a governor to have some pretty nice digs, but Le Domaine du Gouverneur is more than just a luxurious lodging. It’s perhaps most famous for its three golf courses, together the largest concentration in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region; the courses, in turn, are famous for their integration into a remarkably wild landscape. And while some resorts with a focus on golf take an ultra-conservative approach with their accommodations, Le Domaine du Gouverneur indulges in a bit of contemporary style and a bit of historical romance.

Its 53 rooms and suites are divided between a heritage building — the Domaine’s old stable house — and a contemporary wing. Both varieties are stylish, and incorporate modern design, bold colors, and graphical tributes to the natural splendor found outside their walls. They’re luxurious too, but not needlessly opulent, and many of them look out over the golf course, which makes for tranquil and verdant viewing.

The final piece is La Table du Gouverneur, a gastronomic restaurant headed by chef Alexandre Porceillon, who shows a different side of the landscape using local ingredients and a subtle Asian accent. It’s enough to charm even a traveler who’s indifferent to golf.
