If ever there were a destination that was fated to have a Kimpton hotel, it’s Tulum, where the prevailing style has always been one part boutique style and one part accessible, approachable warmth. Unusually, the Kimpton Aluna Tulum is set not on the beach or downtown but in between, in Aldea Zama; the result is convenient enough to both the town and the coast while offering a welcome measure of seclusion.
The style in the rooms and suites is modern and somewhat minimal, though they’re enlivened by colorful accents and tied to their setting by design elements that pay tribute to authentic local crafts. And they’re equipped with their fair share of high-end modern details, from Frette linens to Atelier Bloem bath products. Book a specialty suite if you could use a private jacuzzi, either on the balcony or the rooftop.
There’s a partnership with a beach club, if sand and surf are what you’re after, while on site you’ll find spa services, yoga, two swimming pools, and, in addition to the pool bar, two fine modern Mexican restaurants: Parallel 20˚, which combines Yucatán flavors with those of other cultures on the same latitude, including Thailand, China, and India; and Bhanu Sky Kitchen, a similarly eclectic Mexican-Asian fusion.
