Transforming the former headquarters of the Dutch aviation company KLM into a hotel for modern travelers feels like a fitting homage to the airline’s founder Albert Plesman. To respect the history and architectural heritage of the landmark 1930s building, many of the original design elements have been retained, including the austere brick and concrete façade, the revolving entrance door, and inside, the KLM reception desks. Also look up to spot the original ceilings near the elevators, which nod to the shape of an aircraft engine.
The 103 guest rooms and 19 short stay, serviced apartments have been given a retro feel with warm shades of brown, burnt orange and a mish mash of abstract patterns. The finishing touch is artworks picked out from the hotel’s 500-strong collection, which includes pieces borrowed from The Hague’s sculpture museum Beelden aan Zee. Another homage to Plesman is the Albert Bar & Lounge for morning coffee, evening drinks and light bites, and Restaurant Suus, named after his wife, which serves European classics from breakfast through to dinner.
