Hotel Presidente
An industrial chic aesthetic prevails downstairs — think deconstructed book cases, cool lighting fixtures, Chesterfield sofas, the occasional antique, even a vintage neon sign. Upstairs, Hotel Presidente’s 91 rooms and suites have a more understated look. The standard city-view double room is simple and pristine, almost minimalist, with a pair of white beds, pale tile floors and dark wood panels, a single piece of modern art hanging on the wall, and in the bathroom, lighting that doesn’t make you feel terrible about yourself after a long flight (or a week exploring the jungle.) Bump up a level to one of the superior rooms, reportedly the largest in downtown San José, or a suite with a separate seating area.
There’s free wi-fi and a fitness center, and best of all, included in the nightly rate – a throwback to gentler times? — is a great breakfast buffet. Treat yourself and go back for seconds. Wherever you’re headed, whether cycling around old San José or venturing onward to the beaches and volcanoes of tropical paradise, you'll be glad for the extra sustenance.
