The magnificent setting of the Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu, perched high on the Pointe-au-Pic bluffs overlooking the St. Lawrence River, is no coincidence. The location was specifically chosen by a Canadian shipping company that hoped to attract travelers aboard its new passenger vessels from Quèbec City in the late Victorian era. Resembling a grand ivy-clad French château, the luxury hotel is just as striking to behold today, not to mention easier to access. With hundreds of rooms and suites, indoor and outdoor pools, a state-of-the-art spa, an array of upscale dining venues, and easy access to outdoor activities from golf to winter sports, it’s an easy retreat that feels both modern and timeless.
The hotel’s historic rooms got the Fairmont treatment during major renovations in the late nineties. They’re elegant and classic with sophisticated dark wood furnishings, patterned carpeting, and large bathrooms with Le Labo toiletries. Many have tubs and river views, and the regal La Charlevoix Suite features a baby grand piano, a romantic fireplace, and a lavish marble bathroom with a Jacuzzi. But some of the hotel’s most sweeping views are for all to enjoy: breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served with a dazzling backdrop of water and sky at the Bellerive Restaurant, and the nearby Bar Le Zéphyr, with terrace seating facing the river, is a lovely spot for cocktails at sunset.
