With a name like that, and a location on Main Street right across from the University of Virginia, it’s no great mystery what Graduate Charlottesville is trying to accomplish. This is a hotel that’s squarely aimed at the young — or, as the cliché goes, the young at heart: nostalgic alumni, visiting academics, or anyone else who’s got a fondness for a stylized, idealized version of college life.
What’s perhaps most remarkable about Graduate is its restraint. Nothing would be easier than to take the college-days theme far into kitsch territory, but the combination of tweedy patterned fabrics, retro-inspired furnishings, and vintage artworks stops just short of too much, and the result is both stylish and fun. You won’t mistake these rooms for six-star hyper-luxury, but that’s beside the point — they’re more than comfortable enough, and certainly far beyond the way any of us actually lived during our university days.
The rooms are only part of the package. As you’d expect, the social life plays an outsized role — Trophy Room, the rooftop restaurant and bar, serves locally grown, farm-fresh dishes and creative cocktails with an extraordinary view, while downstairs Poindexter Coffee keeps the caffeine flowing, along with wine, beer, cocktails, and light bites.
