Unlike Petra and Wadi Rum, which bring in a steady stream of international visitors, the coastal city of Aqaba has mostly been a weekend escape for Jordanians. But that’s quickly changing, as more travelers discover the region’s beautiful and easily accessible beaches, and world-class hotels like Al Manara have popped up to meet the demand. Set on the edge of the Red Sea, it’s the Luxury Collection’s debut in Jordan, but it doesn’t look like any other Marriott you’ve seen.
Its modern architecture pays homage to the ancient port nearby, with stylistic influences drawn from Mediterranean and Levantine cultures, though key elements — native stone walls, decorative tile floors, high vaulted ceilings — are rooted in local tradition. Rooms have a regal air: dark wood furnishings inlaid with brass and mother-of-pearl, bespoke beds topped with Frette linens and richly patterned textiles, marble bathrooms with tubs, floor-to-ceiling windows, and private balconies facing the sea or the mountains. Ivory archways shade the indoor-outdoor bar beside the gorgeous waterfront infinity pool, and a private lagoonside beach club is just steps away.
