Sometimes a name contains almost everything you need to know about a hotel. Tivoli Kopke Porto Gaia Hotel is a partnership between Portugal’s Tivoli hotel group and the venerable port wine producer Kopke, situated in Vila Nova de Gaia straight across the River Douro from the city of Porto itself. And it’s impressive on all counts, from its stylish rooms and suites to its supremely restful wellness offerings, its vast contemporary art collection, and its swanky restaurants and bars.
The bedrooms are set in the winery’s old warehouses, which makes for some unusual floor plans, including a few rooms that trade windows for skylights. By the time you’re in a suite, you’re treated to plenty of space and some remarkable views of Porto across the river. An expansive spa and pool lends the hotel something of a resort atmosphere, and its restaurants, helmed by Chef Nacho Manzano, make it a culinary destination. Meanhwile both Gaia and Porto’s riverfront neighborhoods are easily walkable.
