There’s no doubt this is the Chinese Century for luxury-hotel enthusiasts; Banyan Tree, for example, counts among its offerings nearly as many properties in China as in the rest of the world combined. Banyan Tree Chongqing Beibei stakes its territory in the mountainous northern outskirts of the city of Chongqing, and in so doing exposes a global audience to the region’s rugged beauty — and its natural hot springs.
The resort’s accommodations are built in a style inspired by the local traditional architecture, and they’re residential both in atmosphere and in scale — the smallest Retreat spans some 80 square meters. The interiors are handsome, and historically inspired, though they’re equipped with all the requisite modern luxury-hotel comforts. These are augmented, outside the rooms, by offerings like the Banyan Tree spa, with its spring-fed baths; meanwhile three restaurants serve a variety of Sichuan, Cantonese, and international cuisines.
