Housed in a 19th-century town house, the Alma Hotel sits just a stone’s throw from Lake Zurich, with views of the water from the top floor rooms. Once a women’s boarding house, it’s now been transformed into a boutique hotel with just 20 contemporary guest rooms and studios that feature cheerful shades of yellow, orange and blue, parquet floors, and pared back modern furnishings.
In a nod to its past, the top floor wellness area is reserved for women only and comes equipped with two saunas, a steam room, and a solarium. Massage is offered, of course, as well as yoga classes, which take place on the rooftop in the summer months — with a view of the city, the lake, and the mountains beyond. It’s worth noting for solo female travelers that guests are also welcomed at the hotel by an all-women team.
Other facilities include a large lobby, with a view over the inner courtyard’s rose garden, and a veranda for warmer days. And although there’s no restaurant there is a communal kitchen for guests to cook their own meals, and a vegetarian and mainly organic breakfast is served daily along with a selection of homemade cakes. Plus the surrounding area, right in downtown Zurich, offers plenty of dining options, with the Alma serving as something of a refuge from the city.
