China is increasingly where you go to see the most impressive modern luxury hotels, and that’s certainly true of this one — Capella Sanya, a collaboration between architects Jean-Michel Gathy and Bill Bensley, both hospitality design all-stars. The public spaces are monumental, especially the circular lobby with its ornamental pool, and the rooms and villas are suitably residential — at their size you wouldn’t call them “cozy,” but they’re warm and plush even as they verge on opulence. A first-rate spa is present as a matter of course, as are a handful of fine restaurants specializing in the various regional cuisines of China.
