The Italian luxury hotel group ROMEO went big for its launch in the Eternal City, a boutique hotel located in a 16th-century palazzo next to the Piazza del Popolo. Alain Ducasse is onboard, overseeing not only ROMEO Roma's signature restaurant but a breakfast exclusively for guests, and behind the design is the late, great Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid. Her bold, futuristic aesthetic is unmistakable throughout the hotel — note the chiaroscuro effect in the striking black and Carrara marble lobby, and the sculptural curves of walnut and ebony wood paneling in guest rooms — a satisfying counterpoint to more traditional elements, like restored frescoes and statuary, on display throughout the building. The Sisley Paris spa has an indoor-outdoor pool with a transparent floor revealing the archaeological site beneath it, and the rooftop champagne bar offers sweeping views over the city’s rooftops.
