Freehand New York
The designers, Roman and Williams, are no strangers to the New York boutique-hotel scene. Here their eclectic, retro-inspired style turns what was once a humble residential hotel into something much livelier and more livable, with simple wooden furniture and unique artworks by Bard College students. While hostels, in the shared-bedroom sense, don’t exist in New York, the Freehand is the next best thing, adding three- and four-bed bunk rooms to the typical kings, queens, and suites.
Studio is the name of the Freehand’s all-day café and restaurant, a spot that’s equally well-suited for a working lunch or the beginnings of a night out — a night that probably includes a drink at the George Washington Bar, a cocktail bar that’s classic but unfussy. Comodo, meanwhile, is a pan-Latin restaurant from the team behind Brooklyn’s Colonia Verde, serving Mexican, Colombian, Peruvian, and Brazilian flavors interpreted from a New York point of view.
