The small city of Noto is one of Sicily’s most picturesque settlements, full of 18th-century Sicilian Baroque buildings, the whole cityscape seemingly sepia-toned thanks to the distinctive yellow hue of the local limestone and the brilliant Mediterranean sun. Of course, one (spectacular) terrace does not an extraordinary hotel make. Gagliardi is impressive on the inside as well, with interiors that effortlessly mix baroque ornament with rustic crafts and modern comforts, and artworks by contemporary artists. It’s a relatively sedate experience — Noto is a sleepy town, and you’re here to escape, for the most part — and Gagliardi’s atmosphere is perfectly suited to that end.
Thanks to the terrace bar, the rooftop is the ideal venue for a sunset cocktail, but between breakfast and your sundowner, you’re on your own. Thankfully the location means you’re close by to just about every restaurant in this compact city — and the same goes for all of Noto’s attractions, from the famous town hall to the near infinity of churches and the ruins of the medieval city.
