Contemporary Classic en Quiet
The Caves is a collection of twelve private cottages atop a cliff, overlooking the ocean, with plenty of jumping-off points to impress one’s companion and other guests. For those with a beach fetish, consider this: the sea looks better from higher up, and at The Caves it becomes your own private pool. Below, in the cliffside, are natural volcanic caves and grottos which can be explored whilst swimming, or set up for private candlelight dinners. The cottages themselves, designed by Greer-Ann and Bertram Saulter, are after the style of a tropical hut, with thatched roofs, natural ventilation, and construction of wood and stone, and each has a view of the Caribbean Sea.

The emphasis is on privacy and sensuality. The cottages are compact and intimate, though there are many common spaces — sundecks, grottos (including one outfitted for intimate dining), the saltwater pool, the hot tub and Jacuzzi, and the FieldSpa, in an open gazebo overlooking the sea. There are two double suites, and the quiet privacy and breathtaking surroundings make for a romantic visit.

Jamaica, unlike some Caribbean destinations we could name, is well known for its cuisine. Here the locally sourced organic meals are included in the rate, and are served in a variety of inspiring locations. Various activities typical to island resorts are available, from kayaking and snorkeling to bicycling and nature tours, all arranged with a smile by The Caves’ obliging staff. But here the guests are left to their own choices, in private, and the pace is as slow as you want it to be.

Please note: Children 16 and older are welcome at the hotel.

How to get there: The hotel is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes' drive from Montego Bay airport; the cost by hotel car is $120 for 2 each way.

We were disappointed. We stayed at a sister hotel (Goldeneye) last year and LOVED it. We thought this hotel would have a similar vibe. There is no beach, which we expected, but there were not enough lounge chairs for the guests. If you did not wake up at the crack of dawn to claim your space, you had nowhere to relax all day. The water was warm and being able to jump in and snorkel immediately was a plus. The staff was also very very kind and accommodating. We did have to wait over an hour at check in to get a tour of the grounds and settle into our room - even though they knew we were coming from on an hour and a half drive from the airport. One other negative - the adjacent hotels played loud club music circa 1990.

No beach, few people. Friendly staff from the moment we arrived to the final dropoff. Cliffs and open bar, cold coconuts and no worries.

scenic views are out of this world - even from the rooms. i've never seen beach views like this.
