The Okuchichibu mountains occupy the Goldilocks zone of Japanese mountain destinations — not too far from Tokyo, and not as forbidding or remote as the Japanese Alps, deeper into Honshu. In other words, perfect for the Hiramatsu group’s flagship: Hiramatsu Karuizawa Miyota. It’s nominally a resort, though they’ve wisely kept the room tally manageable to keep the views uncrowded and the service top-notch. That also means capacious rooms with floor-to-ceiling views and hot-spring baths. Multiple lounges make space for hi-fi record listening sessions, a lazy afternoon with an art book, or simply watching the changing of the seasons in the lap of mountainside luxury.
