citizenM Tower of London Hotel
This is the future we were promised. London has no end of impossibly lofty luxury accommodations for oligarchs in exile, but the modernist vision of practical, stylish, affordable design for the rest of us has proved rather more elusive. Trust the Dutch to do something about it — specifically, the CitizenM hotel group, which started by reinventing the dreary old airport hotel and is now spreading like wildfire across Europe’s capitals and beyond. CitizenM Tower of London Hotel is their second London effort, and judging by its scale, their Bankside operation was just a trial run.
A glance out its south-facing windows reveals that the name is particularly apt — you’re looking down at the Tower itself, and over the river just beyond. The building itself is an impressive one, a modern structure in stone and glass by London architects Sheppard Robson, designed to integrate with — but not imitate — the surrounding Georgian terraces. And it’s built right over the top of Tower Hill tube station, which means particularly easy access.
With its contact-free check-in and its extravagant cleanliness measures, it’s familiar to anyone who’s been to a CitizenM; a communal self-service lobby, an impressive selection of books, an eye for classic modernist furniture by the likes of Eames and Panton, and compact, pod-like rooms that maximize convenience and comfort while minimizing their physical footprint. If you can swing one of the £400-a-night West End luxury hotels, by all means, don’t let us stop you — the rest of us will be right here.
