citizenM London Shoreditch
CitizenM’s formula makes good sense just about anywhere it’s been tried, from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport to New York’s Times Square. But it’s perhaps nowhere so desperately needed as in London, a city whose legendarily expensive real estate means legendarily expensive hotels. It’s no coincidence, then, that the English capital is now home to no fewer than three: and the third, CitizenM London Shoreditch, takes on what might still be London’s most boutique-hotel-hungry neighborhood.
It’s the ideal location for a design-conscious and budget-friendly hotel like this, as an enormous amount of London’s creative work goes on within a half-mile or so of this spot. Modern furniture, minimalist design, a self-serve communal lobby café, and affordable, efficient rooms are just what East London’s creative class ordered. The rooms are high-tech and manage to squeeze maximum comfort out of modest space — good old Dutch design saves the day again. And the concept is perfectly suited to the times: check-in is self-serve and contact-free, and the pod-like rooms are so clean you could manufacture microchips in them.
Between the lobby bar and the café you’ve got options in-house, though of course this being one of London’s hippest areas, there’s no shortage of good food, drink, or coffee nearby. There are certainly ways to spend a lot more on a hotel in this town; what’s mystifying is that anybody still wants to.
