Dornoch, an hour to the north of Inverness in the Scottish Highlands, has a bit more going on than just golf, but the Links House at Royal Dornoch makes its priorities plain — the first tee is a mere fifty feet from its door. As golf hotels go, it’s on the small side, just 15 rooms, and it’s got personality for days — the main house, in distinctive Sutherland sandstone, dates back to the 1840s. You’re within easy walking distance of both the beach and the center of town, and the hotel, small as it is, contains not one but two restaurants: the fine-dining Mara and the brasserie/café–style Courtroom.
