Modern Design en Quiet
While we wouldn’t want to accuse designers in general of taking insufficient care with their work, we will say that a hotel designer who’s willing to live with their work every day has got some serious skin in the game. The Woodhouse Lodge isn’t just a Sixties-vintage A-frame lodge transformed into a contemporary boutique hotel, it’s also the home of hotelier and interior designer Megan Pflug, who moved from Brooklyn to Greenville with her artist husband to open it.
And where some designers might have gone all in on the spirit of ’62, Pflug studiously avoided Sixties furniture and design, letting the lodge’s mid-century architecture contrast with warm, organic-feeling Shaker-inspired interiors. The result is eclectic but still focused, and is a memorable look that’s anything but off-the-shelf. The ten rooms are all subtly different, each with its own pattern on its leather headboard, and all come with thoughtful little luxuries like Luft mattresses, Brooklinen bedding, and bath products by the local Village Common.
For all its comfort and style, however, the Woodhouse Lodge is still the sort of low-key lodging that rewards self-sufficient travelers. Public spaces include a lovely lounge with an open kitchen, as well as four acres of tree-lined lawns. A planned expansion will bring a more thorough food-and-beverage program — for now, there are snacks for sale in the kitchen, and a breakfast served on weekend mornings.
