Scribner's Catskill Lodge
The lodge, which dates from 1966, was originally the passion project of an artist owner intent on creating a playful getaway. After extensive restorations, Scribner’s still has some of that retro charm. But the aesthetic and amenities are distinctly 21st-century: these 38 guest rooms, with built-in furniture and high vaulted wood ceilings painted bright white, feel more like urban lofts than cabins. Indeed, some have lofted sleeping spaces. All are lined with dark maple floors, made cozier by woven rugs, with terracotta tiles in the bathroom, in addition to rain showers and artisanal bath products. Some have fireplaces, too, a feature that’s especially desirable in ski season, as Scribner’s Catskill Lodge is within easy proximity of Hunter Mountain.
It’s also within easy driving distance of New York City. That’s more or less the point. It’s easy to get to, but you’ll feel far enough away when you’re sunbathing or sipping cocktails on the cedar deck, or dining on Alpine-inspired cuisine — made with locally sourced meat and produce — in the hotel’s gourmet restaurant, where floor-to-ceiling windows showcased the forest-fringed hikes beyond. Scribner’s Catskill Lodge is your base camp for the weekend: from here, you can hike or ski, kayak or cycle, or just drink in the mountain views.
