Contemporary Classic en Quiet
If the coastal towns down by the New Hampshire border are where you get your introductory-level Maine experience, then the more remote midcoast is the intermediate material — Camden, nestled between the mountains and the Atlantic, is well worth the extra distance. It’s here that Whitehall is entering into what is, in a way, its third life; the mansion, built in 1834, was turned into a hotel in 1901, and now, after a 2015 renovation, it’s a vibrant tribute both to 19th-century New England and to mid-century modernism in its particular Northeast flavor.

The rooms and suites vary widely in size and in plan, from a relatively humble double room to a pair of 500-square-foot suites. They’re unified by their contemporary-classic visual style, their focused color palettes, and their well-chosen touches of luxury. Whitehall’s location, right on High Street, places you within walking distance of the center of Camden, and also within walking distance of Mount Battie and its hiking trails. It’s a splendid escape, a fine advertisement for the charms of midcoast Maine, and a town that’s got a bit of culture as well — it was in this very house that the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, something of a local legend, first began her career.

Please note: Whitehall is open seasonally from early May thru October.
