Only a handful of historic buildings survived the fire that swept through the Greek castle town of Ioannina in 1820. One of these, a pretty stone mansion near the castle walls, is now home to Kamares Boutique Hotel & Spa. Much of its old-world grandeur remains — heavy wooden doors, brick archways, ornate fireplaces, sumptuous antiques, and original tile flooring. Rooms exude period charm, too, with exposed stone or brick walls, decorative bedframes, and vaulting wood-beamed ceilings. Adding more visual interest are colorful details from red velvet antique loveseats to hand-painted wall panels, and updated amenities include Nespresso machines and modern bathrooms with Jacuzzis. The historic center’s museums, shops, and restaurants are a short stroll away.
