MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

Kyoto may be the capital of traditional Japanese hospitality, but it’s also home to a burgeoning crop of exquisitely crafted boutique hotels. To call a place like Kikokutei Bekkan “avant-garde” would be to miss the mark a bit, because while its means may be modern, the end to which they’re put is a tranquil hospitality that would be perfectly recognizable to a 19th-century ryokan guest. It’s a more minimalist experience, to be sure, though the spartan rooms are certainly comfortable; the culinary offerings begin and end with breakfast, though the location means the city will capably provide.
