It’s not the only boutique hotel in Mexico that’s fashioned out of a Spanish colonial mansion, complete with an Andalusian-style patio and colorful tilework. But San Miguel de Allende’s Casa Hoyos is delightfully one-of-a-kind. Inspired by Julián Hoyos, a Spaniard who snapped up the property in 1938, the décor is colorful, vibrant, and full of character. Aside from the hand-painted mural of the Virgin Mary that looks solemnly over the archways of the modernist courtyard, the look is whimsical and nostalgic, filled with cheerful greenery and eclectic design pieces.
The rooms are cool and minimalist at first glance, with vintage-looking tiled bathrooms and angular four-poster beds, but look closer at the details: their bespoke furnishings and decorative objects, crafted by Mexican artists, pay stylistic homage to artisanal traditions from around the country. Up on the rooftop bar Tonana, the mixology team takes inspiration from the mother goddess to create cocktails infused with medicinal plants and botanicals, while restaurant COMITÉ fuses international flavors with modern Mexican cuisine.
