Contemporary Classic & Quiet
Many Puglian masserie, or traditional fortified farmhouses, have been converted into hotels, and Secolario Masseria del Viverbene is among the finest examples. It’s set amid ancient olive groves in the Salento countryside, a region known for its production of cold-pressed olive oil. There’s a quiet sobriety to the property’s thick-walled limestone buildings, and they’ve been smartly refreshed inside, with their best features, from high vaulted ceilings to exposed wood beams, enhanced by elegant white and earth tones. In addition to custom stonework by the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza, the gallery-like common spaces feature installations by an impressive array of international artists like Hidetoshi Nagasawa and Michelangelo Pistoletto.
The best rooms are ground-level suites with sliding glass doors opening directly into the surrounding gardens. But even the simplest rooms are silent and sophisticated with cool stone flooring, king-sized platform beds made up with cream-colored linens, artisan-made furnishings, and spacious bathrooms with oversized walk-in showers. Outside, local wines and olives are served beneath the shade of centuries-old trees, and fresh vegetables and herbs, grown in the nearby greenhouse, are the basis for Puglian dishes at the hotel’s restaurant, Volivo. The outdoor pool is particularly inviting after hiking or wine tasting nearby, and the hotel arranges boat trips departing from Otranto, a short drive away.
