Contemporary Classic & Quiet
Spain is well known for its wine, sherry, and cava, but the northwest coast, as it happens, is cider country. Set on a picturesque road that leads past apple orchards and cider mills, Hotel ARTIEM Asturias is a sophisticated escape just outside Gijón. It’s the first luxury-hotel offering from ARTIEM, a Spanish hospitality group that honed its style — a hybrid of healthy, high-end living and environmentally friendly practices — on Menorca. The formula works well here; the hotel doubles as a spa and wellness retreat with a state-of-the-art hydrotherapy circuit and an extensive menu of treatments for body and mind.
The design, with its clean lines and plentiful wood and glass, is both modern and classic. The sleek, airy lobby has high vaulted ceilings, cozy leather sofas, and huge picture windows overlooking the gardens and the Asturian countryside. Rooms and suites are elegant, silent, and designed for relaxation. The simplest have blonde wood floors, blackout blinds, wide beds made up in luxury linens, and stone-lined bathrooms with walk-in rainfall showers. Suites come with extras like private terraces and separate living areas, while attic rooms, though smaller, are especially charming with sloping timber ceilings. A health-conscious breakfast spread highlights local produce, and the hotel’s lounge, with its gleaming grand piano and glass-encased fireplace, is an inviting place to return to after a day out exploring beaches and cider houses.
