Contemporary Classic & Lively
Though Altis Avenida belongs indeed to the Altis chain, benefitting from the standardized service and professionalism that confers, it’s got the style and the character you’d expect from an independent operation. A 70-unit boutique hotel and cosmopolitan landmark in the city center, blessed with considerable views, this place has a knack for bringing together folks from all walks of life.
Respect for historic architecture figures large in the aesthetic. The building itself, charmingly illuminated by night and nestled up against Restauradores Square, lends classic 1945 charm; many of its quirky details have been retained, allowing Cristino Silva’s original verve to inform deferent renovations by Vasconceles Marqués and Artica studio. They’ve explicitly channeled the glittering, glamorous, danger-inflected feel of the Forties — witness the black Angola marble and sculptural pendant lighting fixtures in the lobby — without crowding out contemporary necessities in the bedrooms, many of which come with private balconies. Subtle luxury emerges from the lofted ceilings, oversize leather headboards, and lacquered lamps, though the overall impression of a sleek, sleep-conducive escape pod remains at the end of the day (when you need it most).
Rossio Gastrobar, the top-floor restaurant, is a sophisticated and buoyant space, melding stone and brass accents with tile wall treatments depicting the Lisbon of yore in delicate azure lines, and it’s made even better in clement weather by the rooftop terrace. You wanted panoramic views, here you have them.
