Kiya Ryokan

In attempting to find the optimal solution for the ryokan equation, most guests look for a location that’s not too far from a big city, but far enough that there’s plenty of fresh air and an abundance of peace and quiet. In that regard Kiya Ryokan, in the sleepy city of Uwajima on Japan’s southern island of Shikoku, might seem to be a bit remote.

The payoff is in the uniqueness of the Kiya experience. Founded in 1911, it has a long history of hosting Japanese literary figures, and more to the point for guests who don’t happen to be Japanese literary figures, it’s fresh off a very thorough restoration. The result is a clean, pared-down design, with traditional elements and modern details coexisting in a matter-of-fact way — some innovative lighting solutions and some well-chosen modern furnishings usher the house into the 21st century. There’s no reason, aside from sheer aesthetic prejudice, why flat-screen TVs and iPod docks can’t share time with shoji screens and tatami mats.

It’s in the big picture, however, that Kiya most differs from the typical ryokan. Here it’s all or nothing — the whole house is let as a single unit, sleeping up to eight. For an introduction to Japanese country innkeeping it’s perhaps unrepresentative, but as a residential experience it’s about as immersive as it gets.

JR Uwajima station is 80 minutes by train from JR Matsuyama Station（special express JR Yosan Line). Kiya Ryokan is 5 minutes by taxi (or 15 minutes walking) from the train station.
