Though today it’s dwarfed by the skyscrapers of Toronto’s financial district, there was a moment in 1929 when the Royal York was the tallest building in the British Empire. Like the other Canadian Pacific Railway hotels, it’s now a part of the Fairmont family, and its historic grandeur has been updated with (subtly) contemporary interiors and the full complement of modern in-room comforts. The spa and health club features a 50-foot indoor swimming pool, and the dining and drinking offerings include Reign, a modern Canadian brasserie, as well as Clockwork Champagne & Cocktails, which does daytime duty as the venue for afternoon tea.
