Ordinarily we’d say “wonderland” is laying it on a bit thick, but in the case of the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland it might even be an understatement. Built into the rock walls of a flooded quarry in suburban Songjiang, this is a hotel like no other on earth — it took extraordinary feats of engineering to create a semi-subterranean luxury hotel that’s nonetheless flooded with sunlight, and turns a site that might never have been developed into, well, a wonderland. It feels like the finest hotel on some futuristic off-world colony; safe to say it’s an experience you won’t soon forget.
