You might expect old-fashioned elegance at Le Comptoir Saint-Hilaire, a boutique hotel located inside an old stone farmhouse in the Cévennes. But there’s a whimsical air to the place — think emerald-green sheets, glowing candelabras, and an abundance of indoor trees — which makes sense, given that the interiors were designed by the founder of France’s top luxury brand for children. One suite has a quirky beach theme, with sandy floors, while another, adorned in Scottish plaids, has its own billiards table. Generally, guest rooms are rustic-chic, with exposed stone walls, clawfoot tubs, and private balconies overlooking the forested grounds complete with a tennis court and swimming pool. Some have adobe fireplaces or hot tubs. A lavish breakfast with freshly baked breads and pastries happens indoors, but when weather permits, gourmet lunches and dinners with wine are served at a long table set up beneath the trees.
