The Four Seasons Osaka, a sleek sailboat-shaped skyscraper in the historic Dojima neighborhood, looks ultra-modern from the outside. But it’s surprisingly traditional inside, thanks to its ryokan-inspired design. Indeed, the entire 28th floor is dedicated to the concept — hailed as the city’s first modern ryokan experience, its rooms have tatami floors, futon-style platform beds, sliding screens, and walls lined in washi paper. Rooms and suites on other levels, thoroughly sophisticated but more neutral in style, also feature elements like delicate latticework and square soaking tubs, and all have oversized picture windows overlooking the city and the mountains. Ofuru baths add local character to the 36th-floor spa, also home to a luminous indoor pool.
