Mallorcan hotels tend to lean at least a little bit on the island’s rustic charm, but Súmmum Prime Hotel, in the heart of the capital city of Palma, is as sophisticated as they come. It’s made from a 15th-century Gothic palace that saw renovations in the late 19th and early 21st centuries, resulting in what you see today: a luxury boutique hotel with roughly equal measures of historical distinction and contemporary verve.

The setting, on a cobblestone street in the old town, could hardly be more atmospheric, and the hotel’s vibe is remarkably private — with just 18 rooms and suites, Súmmum Prime is modest in size, if not in ambition. The minimalist, nearly monochrome color scheme in the rooms is soothing, and eye-catching modern details clash memorably with antique elements like timbered or frescoed ceilings.

On the top floor is the solarium and swimming pool, and in the basement, under the old cistern’s vaulted ceiling, is the spa, with a sauna and another pool of its own. The club room is not a nightclub but an elegant antique-style library lounge, separate from the 1874 Lounge Bar & Terrace. And the restaurant, Equus, makes its home in the palace’s old stables, serving upscale French fare alongside a selection of local wines.
